Our product mission
We cultivate genuine, dynamic relationships with the numerous and varied individuals responsible for our food.
In the ever-evolving food landscape, we make educated decisions and push the boundaries of responsible sourcing. We’re committed to sourcing at least 60% of our products from local, independent suppliers. And we’re committed to lending them a hand to help them succeed, whether it’s through coaching and training, favorable terms, or simply being the first retailer to offer them a space on the shelf. When evaluating multiple supplier options, we give preference to under-represented suppliers, those who demonstrate a commitment to reducing their environmental impact, and those which contribute to economic empowerment. Suppliers are expected to adhere to Bi-Rite’s supplier code of conduct.
We also inform our community about the true cost of food and actively advocate a positive impact on our food system. By celebrating craft and heritage, we preserve diversity, traditions, and taste. As a result, our food is honest, memorable, and full of flavor!
“Genuine, Dynamic Relationships”
Our relationships are as direct as possible, and always mutually beneficial. We take time for face to face interactions, whether we’re visiting a farm a few miles away or taking annual trips overseas. We openly give and receive feedback because we know it helps all of us to do our jobs better. We see ourselves as ambassadors for our vendors, and take pride in sharing their stories. We build every relationship on a foundation of trust.
“Push the Boundaries of Responsible Sourcing”
We taste every product on our shelves and in our kitchens. The first question we ask is, “are the ingredients identifiable and transparent?” We do our due diligence, educating ourselves about the issues, people, and products we work with. We go beyond certifications to understand how our products were grown and made.
We respond and adapt to the changes in our environment and to new issues facing the food system. We aren’t satisfied with the status quo, and are always looking for areas where we can improve, and inspire and assist others on their path to greater sustainability. We are constantly learning and advancing: such as finding even more direct routes to amazing products like our single-farm source Parmigiano Reggiano, to evaluating our product selection, weeding out legacy items and replacing them with those that meet or exceed our standards.
“True Cost of Food”
We understand that there are many external costs involved in creating the outstanding products we sell, and we aim to ensure that these are fully reflected in the prices our vendors receive for their goods. We know that when something seems to be a value it can mean that environmental, human, or other factors were not accounted for, and that cheap food is paid for in other ways. We pay a premium to ensure integrity at every step in the supply chain, from responsible growing practices to fair labor to food miles. We believe that Good Food should be accessible to everyone and strive to educate our community about the true value and cost of Good Food. Our product mix reflects a range of price options – even our “basics” are the best in their class – and we encourage our guests and staff alike to cook well and be resourceful in their use of ingredients.
“Our Food is Honest, Memorable, and Full of Flavor”
Our food tastes exactly like what it is, without fillers, additives, or unnecessary ingredients. By celebrating the peak of every season, the diversity of plants and animals alike, honoring regional cultures, and seeking out craftsmanship, we ensure that every bite tastes the best it possibly can. When you taste our food you can tell each flavor component is in harmony with the others. We hope our food stays with you long after you enjoy it, whether it creates a new food memory or evokes nostalgia for experiences from your past.
